New mandatory SMS alias registration in Spain: what's changing and how it affects you
SMS messaging in Spain is entering a new regulatory phase. Starting June 7, 2026, all messages sent to Spanish numbers using alphanumeric sender IDs (aliases) must comply with a key requirement: the sender ID must be previously registered and authorized. Otherwise, operators may block the messages.
This measure is part of a new regulatory framework designed to combat fraud and identity spoofing (smishing). For many companies, this represents a significant change in how SMS sender IDs are managed.
In this context, LabsMobile, as a registered telecom operator in Spain, has access to the official process and has already started registering sender IDs for its clients, ensuring service continuity without disruptions.

What is a Sender ID (alias) in SMS?
A sender ID (alias) is the name that appears as the message sender instead of a phone number. For example, a company can send SMS messages displaying “LABSMOBILE”, “BANK”, or its brand name.
This improves brand recognition, but it has also been used fraudulently. Therefore, the new regulation requires that every sender ID be officially registered and linked to a legitimate company.
Why has this registry been introduced?
The main objective is to increase the security of the SMS channel and prevent fraud. Until now, companies could freely configure sender IDs, which allowed impersonation.
Under the new regulation:
- All sender IDs must be registered with the CNMC
- The company must prove ownership or legitimate use
- The sending provider (such as LabsMobile) must be authorized
This ensures that only legitimate businesses can use specific sender IDs.
Key date: June 7, 2026
This is when the regulation becomes fully enforceable. From that date:
- SMS with unregistered sender IDs will be blocked
- Messages from unauthorized providers will be rejected
- Non-compliant messages will not be delivered
This means that failing to register your sender IDs on time may result in a complete service disruption.
Who is affected by this regulation?
This regulation applies to any company sending SMS to Spain, regardless of where it is based:
- Spanish companies
- International companies
- SaaS platforms
- Marketing agencies
- Public and private entities
If you send SMS to Spanish numbers using sender IDs, you must register them.
Requirements to register a sender ID
To complete the registration, companies must demonstrate a legitimate link between the sender ID and the business. This may include:
- Registered trademark
- Trade name or legal entity name
- Corporate domain
Additionally:
- The owner must validate the registration with the CNMC
- The authorized provider (LabsMobile) must be specified
- The process may take several days or weeks
