SMS: the safest way for companies to communicate

SMS messaging is considered one of the most efficient communication methods in the world. According to studies, 94% of text messages reach their recipients with success, which is a far higher rate than other forms of business communication. On top of this, SMS messages are very likely to be read, particularly compared to emails or network alerts which can easily be forgotten about. On average, a text message is opened within 90 seconds after it has been received.

It is important to differentiate between using SMS messaging P2P (Person to Person) and B2C (Business to Consumer). B2C messaging opens up a direct line of communication with thousands of customers around the world, and offers them immediate and effective information. Using SMS communication globally seems complicated, but can be very useful if it is used effectively.

The difficulties of sending SMS messages globally

Sending SMS messages around the world can be compared to planes in transit flying to different destinations. An airplane has various routes it can take: some are smooth, direct routes, and others have delays and cancellations, different legislation and tax payments.

Something similar happens with SMS messages. An SMS API is an application responsible for taking a message, sending it to a short message service center (SMSC), and then locating interconnected servers to generate the precise ‘jumps’ required for the message to reach its final destination. The message could have a smooth ride, or a treacherous journey.

International legislation, a potential problem

Once you know the path of the platform of the message from A to B, it is important to understand that each country has its own rules and regulations surrounding SMS messages. For example, messages sent to Brazil have a character limit of 157 (160 is the most common globally), and cannot be of a commercial nature.

With this information in mind, you have a choice between a provider that offers adaptable routes and a structure that works with direct routes (like LabsMobile), or a provider that works with a large number of different servers and jeopardizes the security or privacy of your messages.

You don’t have to be an expert in SMS messaging platforms for business, but it is important to work with a company that is. Although SMS messaging is a tremendously useful method of communication for your company, but you should always monitor its success.
